The inn used to be the home of the Commandant of Fort Screven, it was built by the Army Corp of Engineers in 1898 and is one of the oldest buildings on the island, and one of the two or three left with its original features.

The heart pine floorboards, fireplace and bathroom are all as they were when the home was built in 1898. It still retains its Tin Roof Ceilings which replaced the plaster ceilings in 1899, the former turned to dust when the artillery saluted the Colonel every morning outside the house.
