About the Earl of Chatham, William Pitt, 'The Elder' (1708-1778). Chatham County is the northernmost of Georgia 's six coastal counties with Savannah as its principal city and port of commerce. The county was named in honor of William Pitt, “the Great Commoner” and the first Earl of Chatham. Pitt was British Prime Minister of England during the French and Indian War. Later, he opposed the Stamp Act and was a popular figure in the American counties. In 1793, the legislature created Bryan County from the western portion of Chatham County. The Americans also trusted Pitt after his handling of the Seven Years' War and because of his anti-Stamp Act speeches.

With the outbreak of the American Revolution, Whig forces took control of government in Georgia . On February 5, 1777, they adopted the state's first constitution -- the Constitution of 1777. Article IV of that document transformed the existing colonial parishes into seven counties, with Creek Indian ceded lands forming an eighth county. Chatham County Georgia was formed out of Christ Church Parish and St. Phillip Parish in 1777. It is the fifth oldest county in Georgia and is the home of Savannah, which serves as the county seat.

Today Chatham County is comprised of 14 cities and towns, plus Pin Point Georgia. Pin Point is a village eleven miles from Savannah. In 2002 the population was 275. The town is best known as the birthplace of Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas. The sign announcing the town says as much. Other cities and towns are Bloomingdale, Garden City, Georgetown, Isle of Hope, Montgomery, Pooler, Port Wentworth, Savannah, Skidaway Island, Thunderbolt, Tybee Island, Vernonburg, Whitemarsh Island, and Wilmington Island.
