About Thomas Pulaski Charlton. In 1819, Savannah was abuzz with activity. On July 12, 1819, Thomas Charlton began one of his two his terms as mayor of Savannah. The S.S. (Steamship) Savannah leaves the city of Savannah [May 22, 1819] for Liverpool, and on June 20, 1819, the steamship Savannah, the first steam-powered ship to cross the Atlantic Ocean, arrived in Liverpool. In May 1819, President James Monroe arrived in Savannah, staying at the home of William Scarbrough, a local merchant.

T. U. Pulaksi Charlton served 6 terms as Mayor of Savannah and Judge of the Eastern Circuit of the Superior Court. Charlton, Mayor of Savannah, served with Charles Harris as attorney for the Spanish slavers and Spain on the slave ship “The Antelope” incident.
