Event: Fall Hike for Tikes | |
Sunday September 25, 2005 One cloudy, but warm, late summer Sunday morning, a small band of devoted hikers (and a lovable Airedale Terrier named Butterfly) took to the road at 9:15am, heading to the Apple House in Linden just off I-66. The weather began drearily but dry as we approached the meeting point, and even later drizzled slightly as we headed for the mountains. The Apple House is a great meeting location to stop and catch up for multiple parties all bearing down on the Shenandoah's. They have coffee, specialty doughnuts (delicious), plenty of knick knacks and maps of things to do in the locale and best of all it is 15 minutes from our starting point. We gathered together and moved on out to the National Park. The weather, as if on cue, improved dramatically as the sun shone through and the clouds began to dissipate. We began on the short loop walk (1.4 miles) and within an hour had completed it. The children were having fun walking the dog and leading the pack to the barn and some other historic sites. Because everybody was in great spirits and the weather was conducive to a walk, we agreed to continue on and take on another loop that would add 2 more miles before lunch. Along the way, we saw some breath taking views of the Shenandoah's, spotted several birds of prey, walked along leafy, narrow trails enveloped by the trees so close that the woods formed natural walls as if you were walking down a hallway in your home. The children were disappointed to not see deer, bear, foxes and other wildlife. Plenty of chatter, laughter, stories could be heard as this motley crowd enjoyed the day and each other company. We followed the energetic 3.5 mile hike up and down its windy path and followed up with a scrumptious picnic on the tourist center grounds. After renewing our energies, we packed up and headed into town for dessert at a local ice cream parlour. We sat outside in the hot afternoon sunshine and fed our faces with exotic flavours of ice cream and milk shakes recounting the day's experience. We all thanked Angela for her organizational prowess by coordinating the hike, doing the research and making the arrangements. Then we ploughed back into our cars and heading East on I-66, back home. We agreed we should do this again in the Spring. |
