Dip Chandra

Who am I?
  • It was a Sunday (if my memory serves me well) on December 27 th @ 7:30pm that I came into this world
  • Being born into a poor, working class, Hindu family, 2 days after Christmas Day was unfair…
  • Until my early twenties, because I never got 2 presents, just one!
  • The suburb of Brum where we first lived was called Small Heath
  • We lived in a “row house” much like the ones you see in a lot of UK films
  • Where there are 10 to 20 dirty looking red brick homes all joined together.  They were small and old.
  • We did not have a car and no TV till 1964.  We used public transportation or our feet to get by.
  • Birmingham in the 60's was the “Detroit” of the UK.  All the auto manufacturers had factories in Brum
  • The city was (and still is to a degree) very industrial.  The Industrial Revolution began in Brum many years earlier
  • Small Heath was a haven for the Indian Sub-continent Asian community (Indians, Pakistani's, Bangladeshi's)
  • It was close to the downtown (called the City Centre).  I recall going with my mom on Saturday morning to shop in the market.
  • After my sister arrived a year later, mom & dad decided after a number of years to move further out
  • The new suburb was called Yardley and was 4 miles from the City Centre.
  • Our home there was a “Semi-Detached” home.  That is 2 homes that have a common wall.
  • We had a long backyard & a decent front yard too.  The community was more established British folks
  • We were the first Asian family on the street
  • My mom stayed at home all day with us children
  • My dad worked in a couple of jobs, the last one he stayed at for nearly 35 years before retiring
  • I remember we eventually got a car (Ford Anglia) which was a luxury for us.  Dad worked on it all the time, especially the weekends
  • But he never included me in that and I regret that because I never acquired the mechanical, practical skills most men have….
  • And I was never close to my dad
  • One very happy moment I distinctly remember was in the Summer of 1966 when England beat W. Germany 4-2…..
  • In the World Cup.  It is the only time we Brits have won this game that we created, but the whole country went nuts
  • I went nuts in the big backyard of ours (relatively speaking) dreaming as a 6 year old that I was Jeff Hurst scoring the
  • Winning goal on that fabled Wembley turf and 100,000 roaring, rabid fans were ecstatic in their joy.
  • I think that was the afternoon that I fell in love with football.
